Florida Teacher PD Requirements (2026)

120 hours every 5 years for teachers

Source

Primary statutory source: Florida Statutes 1012.585 (Process for renewal of professional certificates). Inservice-points-to-clock-hours conversion (1 IS point = 1 contact hour of training) follows the standard Florida Master Inservice Plan convention used by school districts. The statute's 20-IS-points-= 1-semester-hour rule is the renewal-formula equivalence between the two paths (college credits vs inservice points), not a contact-hour conversion. No annual minimum; pure 5-year cycle. The science-of-reading, students-with-disabilities, and educational-leadership sub-requirements are all WITHIN the 120-point total, not in addition to it.

Professional Educator Certificate requires 6 college credits OR 120 inservice points (or combination) per 5-year cycle. 1 inservice point = 1 contact hour of training. Renewal-formula equivalence: 20 inservice points = 1 semester hour of college credit. Subject-area sub-requirements (all count toward the 120-point total): (a) 2 college credits / 40 inservice points in science-of-reading evidence-based instruction for any certificate including K-6 reading (validity dates July 1, 2020+); (b) 1 college credit / 20 inservice points in teaching students with disabilities for renewal of any professional certificate; (c) ESOL strategies may apply toward any specialization area.

School counselors hold a Florida Professional Educator Certificate (Guidance and Counseling coverage) and renew under the same FS 1012.585 / 6-credits-or-120-inservice-points / 5-year cycle as teachers. The students-with-disabilities sub-requirement applies; the science-of-reading and ESOL add-ons apply only when the coverage area is in scope.

Additional sub-requirement (within the 120): for Educational Leadership Level I or Level II programs with validity dates July 1, 2025+, at least 1 college credit / 20 inservice points must be in Florida's educational leadership standards.
