Nebraska Teacher PD Requirements (2026)

90 hours every 5 years for teachers

Source

Primary source: Nebraska Department of Education Teacher Certification. NE joins ND and IA in the "college-credit-only" cluster — district PD doesn't count toward renewal. The half-time teaching experience alternative is a teacher-friendly out for those who can't complete coursework. The 10-year Professional Certificate cuts renewal frequency in half for advanced-degree teachers.

Nebraska Standard Teaching Certificate (5-year) renews via 6 semester credit hours in education or content area OR 1 year of half-time teaching experience within the 5-year window. Professional Teaching Certificate (10-year, requires master's + 3 years teaching) also follows 6-credit framework. IMPORTANT: PDUs, CEUs, contact hours, workshop certificates, and district-issued PD credits do NOT count toward Nebraska renewal — only semester credit hours from 4-year accredited colleges. Certificates expire September 30 in the 5th (Standard) or 10th (Professional) year following issuance. 6 semester credits × 15 contact hours = 90 contact hour equivalent.
