Ohio Teacher PD Requirements (2026)

180 hours every 5 years for teachers

Source

Primary source: Ohio Department of Education licensure renewal page + Ohio Administrative Code Rule 3301-24-08 "Professional or associate license renewal." 1 CEU = 10 contact hours per OH standard. The 6-semester-hours-OR-18-CEUs structure is OH's renewal equivalence, not a strict contact-hour ratio (6 semester hours of college work is ~90 contact hours of seat time). The 180-hour figure here is the CEU-path equivalent and is the closest single number for cross-state comparison. LPDC oversight is uniquely structured in Ohio: the local committee, not the state, awards and verifies CEUs.

Professional License renewal requires 6 semester hours of approved coursework OR 18 CEUs (= 180 contact hours) per 5-year cycle, or equivalent activities related to classroom teaching. 1 CEU = 10 contact hours in Ohio. CEUs are awarded only by Local Professional Development Committees (LPDCs) — the district-level body that reviews and verifies each educator's Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP). Penalty for late renewal: if not submitted by October 1 of the expiration year, the requirement increases to 9 semester hours. Renewal applications open Nov 1 of the prior year.
