Connecticut Teacher PD Requirements (2026)

No statewide PD hour count for renewal

Source

Primary source: CT State Department of Education Bureau of Certification — Certificate Renewal pages. CEUs were repealed in CT effective July 1, 2012 (Public Act 12-198). Renewal of the Professional Educator certificate is paperwork-only: apply 6 months to 6 weeks before expiration, no documentation of PD required. The 18-hours-per-year district offering (CGS Sec. 10-148a, effective 2013) is a district obligation, not an individual completion threshold. This is the unusual case where the headline question "how many hours per year" doesn't have a state-level answer.

Teachers

Renewal model
No fixed PD hour requirement

Connecticut has NO statewide professional-development hour requirement tied to Professional Educator certificate renewal. CEUs were repealed effective July 1, 2012; renewal of a Professional certificate requires only an application with no documentation of CEUs or hours. Separately (CGS Sec. 10-148a, effective July 1, 2013): each Connecticut school district must OFFER at least 18 hours of professional development per year to the educators it employs — that's a district obligation, not an individual cert-renewal hurdle. Educators are not required to demonstrate hour completion at renewal time.

Counselors

Renewal model
No fixed PD hour requirement

School counselors hold a Connecticut Professional Educator certificate and follow the same no-CEU renewal rule as teachers. No statewide hour mandate; districts are responsible for the 18-hours-per-year offering to employed educators.

Administrators

Renewal model
No fixed PD hour requirement

Administrators (Intermediate Administrator or Supervisor certificate, Superintendent certificate) follow the same no-CEU renewal rule. No statewide hour mandate at the certificate level. Specific leadership-PD requirements may apply at the district level.
