Louisiana Teacher PD Requirements (2026)

150 hours every 5 years for teachers

Source

Primary source: Louisiana Department of Education. LA's self-documentation model is notably strict — teachers must produce all 150 hours of evidence when renewal is initiated. 150 CLUs places LA among the highest hour requirements in the nation. Level 1 teachers are exempt — the requirement only applies once a teacher reaches Level 2 or 3.

Louisiana Level 2 and Level 3 teaching certificates renew every 5 years. Required: 150 CLUs (Continuing Learning Units) per 5-year cycle. 1 CLU = 1 clock hour of district- or system-approved active engagement in professional development. Averages to 30 CLUs per year. Level 1 teachers (initial 3-year cert) have NO CLU requirement — renewal based on employer verification of continued employment only. Documentation burden is entirely on the teacher; district does NOT track CLUs. Graduate-level coursework from regionally accredited university counts at 15 CLU per semester credit. District-sponsored PD days, approved workshops, conferences all count. Renewal initiated by employer through Louisiana Educator Portal.
