Tennessee Teacher PD Requirements (2026)

60 hours every 6 years for teachers

Source

Primary source: Tennessee Department of Education Educator Licensure pages + Educator Licensure Policy 5.502. PDP-to-hour conversion (1 PDP = 1 clock hour) confirmed via the TDOE PDP FAQ and PDP Guidance document (June 2023). Underlying rule: TN State Board of Education Rules Chapter 0520-02-03 (Educator Licensure). License-validity-period reference: Tennessee Licensure Operating Procedures (May 2025). The Practitioner-to-Professional advancement requirement (30 PDPs + 25 months experience + passing content assessments) is separate from renewal and not folded into the cycle_hours figure. The 2-years-of-qualifying-experience alternative is unique to TN and effectively means actively-employed teachers can skip the 60 PDPs entirely.

Professional Teacher License (the long-term license most TN teachers hold) is on a 6-year cycle and requires 60 Professional Development Points (PDPs) for renewal — OR 2 years of qualifying educator experience as an alternative path. 1 PDP = 1 clock hour of professional development. The Practitioner License (initial-level, 3-year, renewable once) requires only 30 PDPs to renew or advance. Subject-area sub-requirements: TN Literacy Success Act early-reading and secondary-literacy trainings (Department-approved) are required for educators not serving in TASL-mandated positions whose license is expiring.

School counselors hold a School Service Personnel License and follow the same Educator Licensure Policy 5.502 structure: Professional license = 6-year cycle, 60 PDPs OR 2 years of qualifying experience. No counselor-specific add-on PDP requirement identified.

Administrators hold the Instructional Leader License — Professional (ILL-P), a 6-year renewable license. Renewal requires 60 PDPs (same as teacher Professional License). The initial Instructional Leader License (ILL) is 3-year and renewable. Administrators serving in TASL-mandated positions (school-based admins per state list) participate in the Tennessee Academy for School Leaders (TASL); those NOT in TASL-mandated positions must complete Department-approved literacy training to qualify for renewal.
