Texas Teacher PD Requirements (2026)

150 hours every 5 years for teachers

Source

Primary regulatory source: 19 TAC Chapter 232 (Certificate Renewal and CPE). Cross-referenced with TEA Standard Certificate Renewal page + the published "Classroom Teacher: 150 CPE hours required" PDF. Renewal happens through ECOS (Educator Certification Online System). Texas is one of the states where counselors and administrators have a HIGHER CPE requirement than classroom teachers (200 vs 150) — a relatively unusual structure worth highlighting.

Classroom Teacher certificate renewal requires 150 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours per 5-year cycle. 1 CPE hour = 1 clock hour. All educators must complete CPE training on educating students with disabilities, including specific information on educating students with dyslexia (this counts toward the 150). All CPE activities must come from SBEC/TEA-approved registered providers — informal or non-approved PD does not count.

Counselors

School counselors hold a Student Services certificate and must complete 200 CPE hours per 5-year cycle (50 more than classroom teachers). Same SBEC-approved-provider requirement applies, and the students-with-disabilities / dyslexia training requirement still counts toward the 200.

Administrators

Administrators (principals, superintendents) must complete 200 CPE hours per 5-year cycle. Same approved-provider rule; same disability/dyslexia training requirement.
